Trumpers - Almond

So, I still seem to be experiencing a fair bit of variability in the shave quality of Trumpers creams. This one I found turned out to be a fair chunk better than all the others I’ve tried. I don’t know, maybe they’re all the same and it’s just really fiddly, and I got lucky with the almond. Anyways, I had previously mainly had issues with the lubrication of GFT creams, this wasn’t an issue this time. It needed a fair bit of water, but this didn’t result in unacceptable levels of thinning out, unlike, for example, the violet.

The almond scent is a nice one. It’s your classic sweet almond / marzipan scent. It’s a tad on the weak side: nice and strong when you’re sniffing the cream itself, or the brush after lathering, but it doesn’t carry over very strongly when applied to the face.

  • 9/10 Scent Pleasantness
  • 7/10 Scent Strength
  • 8/10 Quality of Lather

So, overall, I’d say it’s a 7/10. A bit stronger on the scent could have bumped it up.

4/10, floral, Geo F Trumper, shaving cream, violet

I found Geo F Trumper’s violet cream to be really lacking in slickness. To the point that upon my initial pass, having lathered it up to what usually works quite well for a consistency from most soaps, the razor was “skipping” across my cheek. More and more water eventually managed to wrest something usable out of it, but at the cost of what I consider to be an unacceptable degradation in lather thickness. All in all, it gave what I would consider to be a mediocre shave. And yes, if you’re keeping track, I do think this problem was worse than what I encountered with my last Trumper’s cream review.

The scent is, well, violets. Sweet and floral, I do kinda like it, although I recognize that there’s a lot of guys out there who would consider it to be far too feminine of a scent. As I said, I kind of like it, but I’ll give it a few bonus points for truth in advertising; if you’re looking for something that smells like violets, this smells like violets, and I can’t really ding it just based upon the fact that I’m not ecstatic about the aroma of violets.

But, as for the strength of the scent, it’s middling. As per usual, it’s quite strong in the pot, but when lathered up it loses a lot of its potency. It’s still there during the shave, but only just so.

  • 9/10 Scent Pleasantness
  • 7/10 Scent Strength
  • 4/10 Quality of Lather (reflects new scoring as outlined here)

So, overall, I’d say it’s a 4/10. The shave was sub-standard, and the scent isn’t good enough / potent enough to rescue it.

  • Cost: I got the sample shown free along with one of my purchases to Italianbarber.com, as Joe often does with reasonably sized orders. A 200g pot goes for $29.99 and a 75g travel tube is $17.95.

Geo F Trumpers Lime

Geo F. Trumper’s is another one of the “Big Boys” of the British shave cream scene. Unlike their peer Taylor of Old Bond Street, they don’t seem to neglect the shave soap side of the house, with all but two scents that are available in the soap as well as the cream, and another two that are exclusive to the soap. TOBS on the other hand has a full eight scents which you can’t get in the soap. I typically prefer to get the soap when available, but in this particular instance I was just shopping locally, and the store didn’t have any of the soap in stock for this scent. Oh well. So, here’s what Trumper has to say about their Extract of Limes scent:

Bright green bursts of life-force charge from the tangy sharpness of tropical Limes, while vibrant citrus flashes allow a gentleman’s mind to surge with the majesty of life. And as every pore is infused with the zing and zest of freshly squeezed West Indian Limes, so an exhilarating thrill is marvelously bestowed.

At first, I wasn’t all that much of a fan of the shave this cream provided. Initially, it was severely lacking in glide, making it feel as though I’m scraping even a new blade across my cheek. Turns out, when I was whipping it up to my preferred consistency, that wasn’t quite enough water for this shave cream. Adding a fair bit more fixed the glide problems, while reducing the thickness of the lather a bit, but not dramatically. So if you’re having problems with this cream, a bit more of the old H2O might be the key.

The scent is so-so. It kinda sorta smells like limes, with a tinge of a “chemically” smell. It’s not a bad smell, per se, but not one I particularly find all that pleasant. Strength-wise, it’s not terrible. It was strong enough that I was able to smell it while shaving, just not all that strongly.

  • 5/10 Scent Pleasantness
  • 8/10 Scent Strength
  • 6/10 Quality of Lather (reflects new scoring as outlined here)

Overall, I’d say it’s a 5/10. I don’t recommend this stuff. It’s not bad enough that I’ll be throwing away what I haven’t used yet, but it’s not likely to make it into the rotation all that frequently. I certainly don’t think it’s worth the rather high price you’ll pay for it. If you do get it, just be sure to also use plenty of water.
